Helping Nature Thrive: Supporting the Northern Ireland Reforestation Project with PrintReleaf

That’s why we’re thrilled to share the success of another fantastic sustainability initiative through our partnership with PrintReleaf: the Northern Ireland Reforestation Project.

🌳 Project Overview

This recently completed project took place in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, an area where native woodland covers just about 1% of the land. Recognising the urgency, this initiative aimed to create new native woodlands and crucially link existing fragments of ancient woodland, forming vital wildlife corridors.
The project specifically focused on the Glendun Oak Woodland, increasing connectivity between two areas of ancient woodland that were originally planted in the 1840s. By bridging these habitats, the project helps protect and enhance the environment for countless species, including the endangered Red Squirrel.

🌱 What Was Planted?

Tree Species:
50% Sessile Oak (Quercus petraea)
25% Pedunculate Oak (Quercus robur)
25% Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris)
This thoughtful mix not only supports biodiversity but also ensures a rich, balanced woodland ecosystem that can thrive for generations.

🌎 Why It Matters

Climate Action: Growing these woodlands will sequester large amounts of CO₂, playing an important role in tackling climate change.
Biodiversity: Increased links between ancient woodlands mean more safe spaces for species like the Red Squirrel and countless other woodland plants and animals.
Local Impact: Though the project spans about 32 hectares, it’s one of the largest contiguous deciduous woodlands in County Antrim — a significant step for Ireland’s native forests.
