The Big Switch-Off: Now Scheduled for January 2027
Prepare Your Business for the UK’s Telecoms Transformation
Openreach’s nationwide switch-off of the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) and ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) has been extended to January 2027. This shift will mark the end of the traditional analogue phone network, with all services moving to digital IP-based solutions.
Why Is This Happening?
The PSTN has supported UK phone lines since the 1800s—but it's now outdated and increasingly unreliable. As technologies evolve, modern communication relies on fibre broadband and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), enabling better quality, flexibility, and integration with cloud services.
What’s Changing?
-
From September 2023, no new PSTN or ISDN services can be ordered or amended.
-
All remaining services must transition before the final switch-off in January 2027.
-
Businesses still relying on analogue lines for phones, fax machines, alarm systems, payment terminals, or lift emergency lines must review their setup now.
